This Shouldn't Work (But Does)

Sea oats aren’t supposed to be the main focus of DUNES AT SUNSET.

They’re framing the path, directing your eye… technique so the real subject, the ocean sunset, is where the eye lands.

In DUNES, the grass takes up more than half of the foreground. Which, honestly, when I was working on it — I kept second-guessing. That's a lot of grass.

But here's what it does: it creates a tunnel. The grass is tallest and fullest at the edges, then gets shorter as it moves inward. And that diagonal line points straight to the open path in the middle.

Your eye follows it straight to the water.

It shouldn't work. But because the bulk of grass trends down toward the center, it directs the eye to the path, rather than demanding attention itself.

So you feel like you’re on the path walking to the shore.

That's kind of what I was going for.

Powerful. Beautiful.

Feels like you’re there at the beach.
