Collection: Vertical Art: Coastal Canvases for Tall and Narrow Walls
I'm not a decor person. I just make coastal art and sell it to women who want enjoy coastal beauty on their wall.
If you've got a tall narrow wall - the one beside the front door, or between two windows, or up the stairway - you already know horizontal pieces don't fit it. (Square pieces don't always fit either.) You need vertical art. Something that pulls the eye up, fills the space, and gives you somewhere to look that isn't the empty paint.
What you'll find here is coastal vertical canvases. The pieces below come in sizes from 12x16 up to 16x48, in shapes that fit narrow spaces and tall walls. Hang the size you love in the spot you want to see it. There's no rule about 57 inches from the floor or two-thirds the width of anything. The only person who has to feel something when she looks at it is you.

The Walls That Want Vertical Art
Most rooms have at least one wall that horizontal pieces can't solve. The narrow strip beside the front door. The space between two windows. The wall that runs up alongside the stairs. The skinny gap between the bookshelf and the doorframe.
These are vertical art walls. Tall and narrow. Often overlooked because they don't fit the standard sizes you find at every home decor store.
Vertical pieces work in these spaces because they match the shape of the wall itself. A 12x16 canvas fits a small space between windows. A 16x48 or 12x36 fills a tall narrow wall in the entryway or up the stairwell. The visual height of a vertical canvas pulls your eye up — which makes rooms with high ceilings feel finished instead of half-empty.
Small spaces benefit too. A vertical art piece in a narrow hallway, a powder room, or beside a kitchen window adds something to look at without crowding the wall.
If a wall in your house has been bare for a while because nothing horizontal fit it, that's almost always a vertical art wall.
Vertical or Horizontal: The Wall Tells You
The orientation question is simpler than it sounds. Look at the wall.
If the wall is taller than it is wide, you want a vertical wall art piece. Between windows, beside doorways, up stairwells, in narrow entryways.
If the wall is wider than it is tall - above a couch, above a bed, above a long dresser, a horizontal stretch in a dining room - you want horizontal pieces. (We have a separate collection for those.)
If the wall is roughly square, either works. The choice comes down to what you want the eye to do. Vertical pulls up. Horizontal pulls across. A vertical piece adds a modern touch to a room that's gone heavy on horizontal lines — sofas, dressers, low bookshelves — by breaking the horizontal pattern.
The rule isn't a rule. The wall decides. Stand in the room, look at the space, and notice which direction your eye wants to go. That's the orientation that fits.
Sizes That Actually Fit Your Wall
Our standard vertical canvas wall art sizes are 12x16, 18x24, 24x32, and 30x40. For taller narrower walls, the Vault standalones (which pop up occasionally throughout the year) come in 12x36 and 16x48.
Here's how to think about it without the standard rules:
The 12x16 fits small spaces — beside a window, in a narrow hallway, a powder room, a kitchen nook.
The 18x24 is the most-requested size - for a wall between windows, above a narrow piece of furniture, a stairwell landing.
The 24x32 and 30x40 are bold statements for tall walls. The 30x40 fills a narrow but tall space, beside a doorway with high ceilings or the long wall up a staircase.
The 12x36 and 16x48 are the long verticals, made for narrow walls horizontal pieces can't reach. A skinny strip that runs floor to ceiling. Between two tall windows. The narrow column beside an archway.
You don't need to measure 57 inches from the floor. You don't need the piece to be two-thirds the width of anything. Hang the size you love where you want to see it. The wall is yours. The size is yours. The spot is yours.
One Piece, Two, or a Gallery Wall
A single vertical piece works on most walls. Sometimes the wall wants more than one.
Two verticals side by side fill a wide-but-tall wall, above a couch with high ceilings, on a stairwell wall, in a tall entryway. They can match, same piece in two sizes, or two pieces from the same series. Or contrast: one calm, one a bold statement.
Three verticals create a vertical gallery wall. Three of the same size in a row reads like minimalist art: clean, structured, quiet. Three different sizes in a stepped arrangement reads more relaxed. Either works.
Conventional gallery wall rules say everything has to match: same frame, same spacing, same height from the floor. Skip the rules. Pick the pieces you want to see. Hang them where your eye lands when you walk in.
If you're not sure whether to do one piece or a set, start with one. A single piece you love beats three you tolerated.
Coastal Vertical Canvases — The Collection
The vertical art prints below are coastal wall art. Beaches, shores, ocean, sky. If you want to see what's freshly painted, check new arrivals. For the pieces women keep coming back to, see best sellers.
Some of them are about the place. The cliffs in Maine. A heron standing in shallow water. The light over the water at sunset.
Most of them aren't about the place at all. They're about the moment you remember when you look at them. The warm sand under your feet at the tide line. The whoosh of the waves that drops your shoulders two inches before your brain catches up. The towel that always had sand in it no matter how many times you shook it out.
That's what the art is for. It's a door back to a feeling your body already remembers. Each piece is gallery-quality art on canvas, also available as a vertical painting print.
Hang the one you want, in the size you want, on the wall you want. Then walk past it every day and feel what you feel.
