Pencil sketch of a coastal sunset scene with six beach umbrellas clustered in the bottom right corner.

Something's coming. And it took me three weeks to settle the umbrellas.

I wanted something bright to kick off summer. That part I knew from the beginning.

I knew I wanted a bright sunset. I knew I wanted umbrellas. That was the plan.

What I didn't know was how many umbrellas, what colors, or whether to cluster them or line them up. So I tried everything. Early versions had six. They were bright - really bright. And that's what I love about beach umbrellas, that they get to be loud in a way most things don't. On the beach they're allowed to be the most colorful thing for miles.

But six of them in the corner of a sunset painting was a lot. They crowded the bottom right. They pulled the eye away from the light on the water, which is the whole reason you paint a sunset. I tried them in untold positions and colors. For three weeks they were the thing I couldn't decide on.

Eventually I cut them to three and muted the colors. Just enough pop to feel like summer. Not so much that they take over.

The coastal canvas is finishing this week. I'll show you the whole thing on May 6, and it will be available for sale on May 24 (May 23 if you’re on the Early access list)!
