Why does the pier seem to get smaller?

Not every piece I create makes it to the finish line. Some never feel quite right, so I let them go. But every now and then, one surprises me.

Peaceful Walk was one of those. I nearly scrapped it. The colors weren’t right, there were some areas that just didn’t work. It felt off. I didn’t like it.

But something kept pulling me back— I worked on it some more and some more.  

I centered the piece using a technique called converging parallels. Notice how the rails start out far apart, then get closer in the distance. 

I think it’s really cool, it draws the eye in and creates intense interest and depth.  

So I finally reached a point where I love the artwork.  I’m happy with the colors and the perspective and effect. It reminds me of those quiet moments near the water when the world feels far away. The expanse of the ocean seems to wrap around me and protect me from busy-ness and stress. 

Just know this: sometimes, the best things are the ones we almost let slip away.
