A sea shell so satisfying

The clean outline of this one makes it one of my favorites.

First off, it’s all about the symmetry. When the brain processes symmetry,  it experiences symmetry as clean, beautiful and satisfying.  That is one reason this symmetrical shell feels so eye-catching. The grooves fan out in radial symmetry meaning they come from one point and expand wider and wider - much like the sun’s rays. It’s a pattern that invites your eyes to follow the lines.

Now, the scalloped edges. I wanted that undulating shape along the rim. It’s got that wavy feel that reminds me of how the water leaves marks in the sand after the tide goes out. It gives a feeling of movement even though it’s just a still image.

For the colors, I stayed away from the typical browns you see on the beach. I went with these muted, soft blue-green coral-red and foggy grey instead. It makes the whole thing feel quiet and peaceful, yet it’s also intentional and elegant. Sometimes a shell the shape of a shell is so satisfying you just can’t stop looking. (BEACH BOUNTY shell canvas is the same, a shape so satisfying.)
