8 Best Spots for Snorkel Adventures in Destin FL

Florida has some of the most crystal-clear emerald waters that rival any beach in the world. If you’re into snorkeling, you can experience it along with colorful fish and sea turtles right in Destin–no need to book a flight to the Caribbean. This underwater world exists right here in Destin, Florida, and is perhaps some of the most unforgettable underwater views you'll find anywhere in the United States.

Destin sits on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, and it's earned every bit of its reputation as a popular destination for white sands and snorkeling adventures. The stunning marine life here rivals any tropical destination. And the waters are a perfect place for snorkeling opportunities that'll create amazing memorable experiences.

Here’s a fun fact about the Destin sand: the dazzling white sand it’s famous for is made of ancient Appalachian quartz that has taken thousands of years to make its way down the Apalachicola River from the mountains, creating the finest, whitest sand on the Gulf Coast.

What You Need to Know Before You Snorkel

Before we jump into the top spots, here's some must-know facts. The best time to snorkel? During high tide when the calm waters give you that crystal-clear visibility. Plus, in the summer the warm gulf waters hover around in the 80s—perfect for spending hours exploring without getting cold.

As for snorkeling gear, you'll need a decent snorkel mask that doesn't fog up, some fins, and maybe a flotation device for safety reasons. You can choose to go with tour companies like Flipper's Adventures or Sunshine Watersports for guided snorkeling excursions, or do more of a DIY adventure. Either having the right gear is smart for a safe time observing aquatic life.

1. Destin East Jetties: The Crown Jewel

If you're heading to Destin, the Destin jetties at East Pass are hands down the best snorkeling spot in the area. These aren't just random rocks—they're like an complex underwater habitat where schools of fish, hermit crabs, and even shy octopuses spend their time in shallow waters that range from 30 to 60 feet deep.

What makes this great spot so incredible? The visibility - Hands down - It can reach up to 50 feet on good days! Picture yourself floating above this aquatic ecosystem watching tangs, sergeant majors, and puffer fish dart around like they're putting on a show just for you - just as clear as day. Playful dolphins and loggerhead sea turtles might even pass by to say hello.

You can access this underwater delight through O'Steen Public Beach Access on Gulf Shore Drive. This spot is a favorite for a reason.

2. Norriego Point

At the end of Holiday Isle on a small peninsula, Norriego Point is like the kiddie pool of snorkeling— in the best way possible. The calm waters here are protected from boats and fishing, so you can be quite relaxed while exploring the underwater world.

The shallow waters make it easy to spot unique fish and hermit crabs without having to dive deep or worry about strong currents. It's a perfect place to introduce the little ones to snorkeling, and the crystal-clear waters mean you'll see everything clearly.

3. Crab Island: The Party Sandbar

Don't let the name fool you—Crab Island in Choctawhatchee Bay isn't actually an island at all. It's a sandbar submerged in blue water that's become this popular destination where you can wade around in shallow waters and find aquatic life hiding in the grass.

What's cool about this spot? It’s great for a snorkeling adventure and also for the social scene. Lots of boats anchor here and enjoy a party vibe on the water. Many tour companies use Crab Island as their first stop, and it's  a good time for snorkeling or just soaking up the sun.

This state park also has gorgeous beautiful beaches—though the nature trails and scenery are spectacular as well. It’s also a place where graceful sea turtles come to nest and diverse marine life calls home.
