Doesn't hemp have something to do with marijuana?

The word canvas is from the Greek cannabis. Hemp is a plant that belongs to the Cannabis family. It’s actually the exact same species as marijuana, which is an illegal substance in some places.  However, the word hemp usually refers to parts of the plant that have low THC levels and aren’t considered a drug.

For many years, hemp was valued for its practical uses. The fibers from the hemp plant were woven together to create a fabric that was not only strong but also resistant to wear and tear. This made hemp canvas great for things like sails, tents, and artists' canvases.

Canvas Goes Way Back

Hemp has been used since ancient times. As early as 3,000 BC, people in China grew hemp for its fiber, which they used to make ropes, textiles, and paper. By the Middle Ages, hemp canvas was common in Europe. Artists began to use the fabric for their paintings, since it was much more affordable and lighter than the wooden panels they usually used.

Modern canvases

Over time, the production of canvas changed from hemp to linen fibers. Linen, made from the flax plant, provided a smoother texture and became popular with artists during the Renaissance. Today, most canvases are made from cotton or cotton blends. Cotton canvas is cheaper and easier to produce, and its flexibility keeps canvases from cracking.
