Lake Shawnee Swim Beach: Swimming and Adventure in Kansas

Lake Shawnee Swim Beach: Renovated Swim Beach with Floating Playground

Tucked in the heart of Shawnee County, Lake Shawnee Swim Beach is a summer destination that has it all: swimming, outdoor adventures, and relaxation for visitors of all ages. Located in northeast Kansas, this manmade lake has become a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike, with miles of shoreline and plenty of activities to fill a fun-filled beached day.

Swimming at Lake Shawnee Swim Beach

The Lake Shawnee Swimming Beach was first opened in 1939. In 2000 it reopened after renovations and is now home to Lake Shawnee Adventure Cove. It's a great location looking to cool off during the summer season.

The swimming area is well-marked, and seasonal lifeguards are on duty during regular operating hours, ensuring safety for swimmers. It's worth noting that the Kansas Department of Health monitors the water quality, occasionally issuing advisories for blue-green algae to ensure public safety.

Lake Shawnee Adventure Cove

Lake Shawnee’s Adventure Cove is a recent upgrade and includes excitement for everyone. The cove has paddle boards, paddle boats, and even a floating playground complete with inflatable iceberg. Renting these personal watercrafts is quick and easy and there are also kayak racks if you choose to bring your own gear. Lake Shawnee Club members also enjoy exclusive access to additional activities and perks throughout the season.

Adventure Cove has the beach for those who want to sit and relax, and if you get thirsty, they do offer concessions. They also have sand volleyball courts for visitors who'd rather get in some friendly competition. You can also rent paddle boards and paddleboat, and for after your day's play, they have shower facilites.

It costs $3 to swim and $8/hour for the playground or boat use.

Beach Rules and Safety

Like any great swimming destination, Lake Shawnee Swim Beach has clear beach rules to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment. Flotation devices are allowed in designated areas, and seasonal lifeguards patrol the first beach, second beach, and third beach to keep things safe. While lifeguards are on duty during peak hours, swimmers are still encouraged to be cautious and respect the swimming area boundaries.

Be aware that zebra mussel infestations have been found in Kansas waters, so follow proper procedures for cleaning personal watercraft to avoid spreading this invasive species. The Kansas Department of Health also keeps an eye on the water quality to ensure safety for all visitors.
